General

What is Metal Cloud?

Metal Cloud is a form of cloud service in which the user rents a physical server with a built-in GPU component from FPT. This server is dedicated to the user and not shared with any other tenants.

You can get access to servers with full control over their hardware without virtualization or abstraction layers, enabling maximum performance for compute-intensive workloads.

How does Metal Cloud differ from Cloud server (Virtual machine) instances?

Metal Cloud offers direct access to dedicated servers with no noisy neighbors.

Compared to Cloud server instances deployed in a virtualized cloud environment, the Bare Metal GPU server grants you unrestricted access to the underlying physical servers, making these servers suitable for even the most resource-intensive workloads.

How does Metal Cloud work?

Metal Cloud provides a physical, dedicated server with GPU components where you can install and run your applications.

This setup is particularly useful if you need stable, high-performance infrastructure for demanding workloads like AI/ML model training or custom orchestration.

How long a Bare Metal GPU server can be created?

It is estimated to be deployed successfully after ~20 to 25 minutes with FPT images.

The deployment time may last longer due to your custom image sizes or if too many servers are created concurrently.

What advanced use-cases does Metal Cloud support?

  • AI/ML workloads: Model training, fine-tuning, and inference, especially for large-scale data processing.
  • Custom orchestrations: Technologies like Kubernetes for containerized environments, Slurm for workload management, or other custom setups for complex applications.
  • High-performance computing: Applications that require dedicated resources, such as simulations, scientific computations, and real-time data processing.

Features

Which features does Metal Cloud currently support?

Metal Cloud supports a wide range of our cloud features:

  • Operating system images with FPT images for AI
  • Startup scripts
  • SSH key preloading or setting up a password
  • Networking: Additional IPs, subnets, and Network ACL for security

More features will be added in the near future, so stay tuned!

What storage options are available for Metal Cloud?

  • One NVMe local storage is available in a Bare Metal GPU server.
  • Block Storage service is not supported.
  • File Storage (High-performance Tier) service is supported.

Does Bare Metal Cloud support RAID?

Yes, the local storage supports RAID 0 and RAID 1 functions on the FPT Cloud Portal GUI by using a hardware RAID controller.

More RAID options will be added in the near future.

What regions are Metal Cloud available?

Metal Cloud is available in:

  • Hanoi 2, Vietnam
  • Tokyo, Japan

Billing

How can I be charged for Metal Cloud?

  • Reservation: Fixed price with limited resources based on demand, paying upfront (partial or full) or afterward. The billing period is set for a duration of months (3 to 9) or years (1 to 5).
  • Pay-as-you-go (PAYG): Let you use unlimited resources first and pay afterward. The billing increment is usually by the day or by the hour.

Does FPT charge Bare Metal GPU servers in the Stopped state?

Yes, servers in a "stopped" state continue to reserve the server for your use and therefore incur charges until you release the server. If you wish to no longer accumulate charges for a server, please DELETE SERVER in the FPT Cloud portal for customers.

You are also billed for other services and resources that are attached to any Bare Metal GPU servers.

How is billing for Metal Cloud different from Cloud server (virtual machine) instances?

The main difference is that powering off a Bare Metal GPU server has no effect on the billing cycle.

Meaning that hourly billed servers still accrue at the normal rate whether the server is powered off or on. The billing stops only when the server is deleted.
